I designed this youth centre while working at David Nairne and Associates. We met with youth and youth workers, visited the old youth centre to carefully analyze what worked and what should be improved, and began laying out the space first as coloured rectangles, later as flowcharts, gradually increasing in resolution until we had a concise set of plans
Design was no easy task. Our building had to be rugged both to withstand the weather extremes of BC’s North coast, and heavy use by an active youth population. Our building had to be small and carefully placed on an irregularly shaped constrained lot. Detailing had to be thoughtful and considered. Budgets were tight, and our project was to be constructed by local labour using readily available materials.
